Board of Trustees Moves Forward with International Travel
At the Tuesday December 15th Regular Board Meeting, the Holy Family Catholic Regional Division (HFCRD) Board of Trustees unanimously voted to approve international field trips to locations where the Government of Canada Foreign Affairs Travel Advisory advises to “exercise normal security precautions.” All international field trips to locations with higher risk will be re-routed to safer locations or cancelled. The Board recognizes that student, staff and chaperone safety is central in any decision and acknowledges that there is immense educational value for our students who have the opportunity to participate in international travel. Further, the Board continues to have the right to cancel any international travel at any time.
The Board also approved a motion to adopt all international travel recommendations from the Alberta School Boards’ Insurance Exchange (ASBIE) Insurance Program to maximize safety for all trip participants. These recommendations include monitoring Canada’s Travel Advisory website, purchasing Kidnapping and Ransom Insurance, and requiring all international travel participants to sign the Consent for Participation, Risk Acknowledgement, Waiver and Indemnity for International Field Trips Form.
This decision will affect two international trips in HFCRD, both through Glenmary School in Peace River. The first trip is a World War II learning opportunity to France, Germany, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. This trip will either be re-routed outside of France, or cancelled. The second trip is a drama trip to New York City, which will continue as planned. Trustees consulted with field trip participants and their families in the week leading up to this decision and the feedback was predominantly positive to continuing the field trips.
