Emergency Procedures

 

Introduction

The purpose of this emergency preparedness plan is to ensure that the health and safety of St. Andrew’s School staff and students will be protected in the event of an emergency.  This plan comprises the essential elements of the Emergency Preparedness Program.

 

General School Hours

Monday – Friday

Hours: 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m

Entrances:

  • Main Entrance open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • Senior High Entrance open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • Grade One & Two East Entrances open from 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
  • Grade One, ECS, Grade 3&4 West Entrances open from 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

 

All elementary students arriving after 9:30am must use main entrance
All Parents and Volunteers must report to the office via the main entrance

 

After School Hours

Hours: 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. depending on activities

Entrances: Main Entrance is the only entrance opened

 

Saturday/Sunday Hours

Hours: As arranged with St. Andrew’s School

Entrances: Only area being used will be open

Fire (School Evacuation)

If there is a fire, the fire alarm will be rung immediately and the building evacuated. 

 

When students assemble at the designated safe area, each teacher shall account for his students and prevent unauthorized return of students to the classrooms.  Any student unaccounted for should be reported immediately to the Fire Captain who will radio the school administration.

 

After the location of the fire has been determined, Administration will direct the fire department to the fire scene.

 

Upon arrival of the fire department, or other agencies, the Administration will make themselves available to the officers in charge of the fire, to open any necessary doors and give assistance relating to building plan and equipment.

 

Administration will provide Fire department with Blue Prints of the school

 

If students and staff need to evacuate the grounds of St. Andrew’s School for any reasons the following procedures have been set up:

St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church - Grades ECS- 4 (Key is in Fire Captain’s Kit)
St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church Hall - Grades 5-6 (Key is in Fire Captain’s Kit)
High Prairie Royal Canadian Legion # 37 - Grades 7-9 IOP, and Resource Room (Key can be picked up at House of Furniture)
High Prairie Elks Hall - Senior High (Key is in Fire Captain’s Kit)

 

All collection points are within walking distance

If students need to be transferred via a vehicle High Prairie School Division #48 Transportation Coordinator will be called. St. Andrew’s School vans will also be used.

LOCKDOWN

 

  • Do not be a hero or heroine, keep calm and do not take risks.  Your first responsibility is the safety of your class.
  • Direct any students to nearest classroom if in hallway.
  • Students in the washroom should be instructed to return to the nearest classroom that offers safely accessible.
  • Bathroom checks as follows:
    • Jr. High Washrooms – Mike Marzotko/Julie Davies
    • Sr. High Washrooms in Expansion – Ken Kosak/Heather Daly
    • Grade 5/6 Washrooms – Leanne Morgan/Trudy Cardinal
    • Grade 3/4 Washrooms – Mary Briand/Janella Kosak
    • Grade 4/Early Literacy Washrooms – Anita Stokes
    • Grade 1/2 Washrooms – Joanne Baird/Rachel Valiquette
    • Sr. High Girl’s Washroom – Terry Hogan/Courtney Lawrence
    • Large Gymnasium Washrooms – Robert Levy/Leah Anne Srigley
  • Lock classroom doors.
  • Shut lights off.
  • Close blinds.
  • Have students gather below windows, away from door, and as much as possible out of view from the outside.
  • Do attendance – e-mail Leigh in Student Records the names all missing students.
  • Use school P.A. System and/or e-mail to let administration in the office know where intruder is.
  • Keep an eye on e-mail for messages.
  • Keep students with you until notified by office that the lockdown is over.
  • Use contents of emergency kit to manage students during lock down.
  • Move students and emergency kit to new location on request of police or administration. Wear your identification vest.
  • Notify groups away from school of lockdown.

Lockdown (Code Blue)

  • Do not be a hero or heroine, keep calm and do not take risks.  Your first   responsibility is the safety of your class.
  • Direct any students to nearest classroom if in hallway.
  • During lunch hours, students will be directed to nearest rooms.
  • Students in the washroom should be instructed to stay there, lock themselves in a stall and make themselves as invisible as possible. (Stand on toilet)
  • Lock classroom doors
  • Shut lights off
  • Close blinds
  • Have students gather away from windows looking into the classroom, away from door, and as much as possible out of view from the inside
  • Do not let students leave your care.
  • Do not refuse student access to a secure place.
  • Do not leave classroom if fire alarm goes off.
  • Do attendance – e-mail all administrators with the names of all students in your care.
  • Use school P.A. System and/or e-mail to let administration in the office know where intruder is.
  • Keep an eye on e-mail and or go to the Internet and type SAFE for messages.
  • Keep students with you until notified by office that the lockdown is over. Don’t leave your classroom unless instructed by the RCMP and or Administration. If instructed to leave your classroom please take Emergency kit with you.
  • Wear your identification vest.
  • Once in new location keep your students in one group and check attendance and report attendance to Administration.
