In 2015, the HFCRD Board of Trustees was proud to approve full-day, five-day Kindergarten in every HFCRD elementary school. After seeing positive results with the existing full time Kindergarten programming, the Board felt providing the same opportunities for all students was a priority. This change in programming provides a stronger foundation in literacy and numeracy, which are very important in a child’s formative years, and better prepares students for elementary school.
Faith-Centered Family Environment
HFCRD schools provide a faith-centered environment that includes daily prayer, regular school masses, Religion classes and infusion of our faith throughout each school. HFCRD staff demonstrate Christ-like behaviour, and show respect and dignity for students, staff and community members. We believe in teaching the whole child – in mind, body and soul. Community members are encouraged to tour our schools. Many guests say they can feel the family atmosphere within minutes of entering the school.
Focus on Literacy
To develop confident and skilled readers, HFCRD schools place a strong emphasis on literacy in the formative years. Every elementary student undergoes Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) testing three times each school year. This simple test provides teachers with information about each student’s reading progress in areas including phonological awareness, word decoding, comprehension, and fluency. Throughout the year teachers can use this data to implement specific strategies to help students in areas that they struggle and reinforce areas where they show strength. As the year progresses, we can monitor each student’s growth as they continuously improve their literacy skills.
