Cannabis Remains a Restricted Substance at HFCRD
Posted: October 17, 2018
To all HFCRD students, staff, parents and community members,
With cannabis officially being legalized today, I would like to reassure our school communities that cannabis and all related paraphernalia will continue to be considered restricted in our division. All students, staff, parents and community members are prohibited from non-medical use, possession or trafficking restricted substances on HFCRD school property and at division-sponsored activities. Although the sale of cannabis is now legal, HFCRD continues to promote a drug and alcohol free school environment.
I would like to emphasize that to maintain a drug and alcohol free school environment, we must all work together. All persons in a school are expected to act as citizens who support the law and inform their local Principal of any suspicious behaviour. HFCRD does not condone improper possession or use of drugs or alcohol nor does it condone attendance in our schools under the influence of drugs or alcohol. According to Section 90.28 (b) of the provincial Act to Control and Regulate Cannabis, no person may smoke or vape cannabis on any hospital property, school property or child care facility property.
If restricted substances are used medicinally, exceptions can be made and situations like these will be handled on a case-by-case basis. If your family would like more information about medicinal use of restricted substances on school property, please contact your school Principal or the HFCRD Central Office.
We thank our school communities for their patience as we navigate through the implementation of the Cannabis Act. We thank all levels of government and our local protective services for supporting our schools and deterring youth from being exposed to cannabis.
Yours in Christ,
Betty Turpin
Superintendent
