Holy Family Catholic Regional Division (HFCRD) warmly congratulates Kyara Garnett, a grade nine student at Holy Family School in Grimshaw, who is one of only 16 students across Alberta who received a 2019 Great Kids Award. This award is given annually by the Government of Alberta to honour children and youth who inspire and change the lives of others, and help to build stronger communities. According to their website, the award recipients exemplify the qualities of resiliency, leadership, determination and strength, and have often overcome a wide variety of challenges to make a positive impact in our province.
“Being recognized for the award makes me feel so special because being from such a small town, who would expect this,” said Kyara about receiving this award. “It feels really great being able to represent all of the great kids that exist. I am really thankful for the people who have been there for me through it all.”
According to Alberta.ca, even though life has not been easy for Kyara, she has become a responsible, trustworthy and dependable natural leader at her school. She is frequently called upon to help around the school and is always willing and eager to assist, as evidenced in her active involvement in running the school’s theatre sound system and helping with morning announcements. Even though she has experienced trauma and persistent family struggles, Kyara is that wonderful friend who is empathetic, actively listens, gives advice, and always sees the positive. As a result, she is admired by her peers as someone who treats people with dignity and respect and will stand up for what is right. Simply put, Kyara has not let her difficult life circumstances change who she was destined to be – a great kid.
“Kyara is very deserving of this award. She is a natural leader in our school, is always willing to help out and is a role model to others,” said Holy Family School Principal Victoria Cornick. “We are very proud of Kyara. We are proud of all she has already accomplished and we look forward to seeing all the great things that lay ahead for her.”
Kyara was presented this award on Sunday September 15th at the Fantasyland Hotel in Edmonton. Kyara received a trophy, a night’s stay at the Fantasyland Hotel, passes to West Edmonton Mall attractions, and a prize from a corporate sponsor.
